For the Love of Music: Catching up with JVK — Local Mojo

“I kind of feel like a feral animal.” These are the words of Jo Krieger, lead singer of the band JVK, when asked to describe her stage presence. JVK brings infectious energy while performing, much of that is by design according to Kreiger.  “I don’t really know how to describe it, but something just comes over me,” she said, before explaining that one of her goals each show is to have someone in the crowd tell her that they appreciated her stage presence after the set.Krieger draws her trademark...

For the Love of Music: Changes in Boston’s DIY Music Scene — Local Mojo

Change has come to Boston’s underground, DIY music scene in recent weeks. A Boston Globe story posted November 14 explored what it called a “thriving underground concert scene,” purportedly created by “dozens of young people” in recent times. According to the story, the greatest challenge in this world of underground and illegal concert venues is simply keeping them underground and covert.  Fallout from the article has been swift and severe. Multiple basement venues in the area have shut down th...

Forgotten Teams: The 2010-11 OKC Thunder from Halfpast.noon on Instagram

They were the dynasty that never was. In year three of OKC’s existence after relocating, the pieces seemed to be coming together to form a legitimate championship contender. The Thunder had a blossoming core of draftees featuring Kevin Durant (2007), Russell Westbrook (2008), Serge Ibaka (2008) as well as a young James Harden who came off the bench in his second season. Thabo Sefolosha and Jeff Green rounded out an impressive list of major contributors to the squad. The 2010-2011 OKC squad is today lauded as ahead of its time, and while they came short of their championship potential, this team deserves recognition for its electrifying style of play.

What you need to know about Massachusetts ballot Question 3

AMHERST — Massachusetts voters will have three important ballot measures to consider on Nov. 6. The third ballot question is centered around an existing 2016 law which “prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender identity in places of public accommodation.”

These public areas are defined as any place that “solicits the patronage of the general public,” including hotels, stores, hospitals and sports facilities.

In addition to various LGBTQ rights groups, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker...

What you need to know about Massachusetts ballot Question 1

AMHERST — As the Nov. 6 midterm election date approaches for Massachusetts voters, discussions regarding the three questions on the ballot continue to heat up.

Perhaps the most polarizing debate surrounds Question 1, which involves a proposed law that would limit how many patients could be assigned to each registered nurse at a time. The maximum number of patients per nurse would vary by type of unit and level of care.

The proposal would also stipulate that hospitals cannot lay off nurses in a...

At UMass, Jackson Katz seeks ‘paradigm shift’ in how we understand sexual assault

AMHERST — As a sophomore at the University of Massachusetts, Jackson Katz covered a protest for the Daily Collegian during which women demanded better lighting on campus. Katz was frustrated by the complete absence of male protesters present and inspired by the women speaking up for their own safety.

Katz went on to become the first man to graduate from UMass with a minor in women’s studies, walking across the stage in 1982 into a career of activism.

Katz and his colleagues founded the Mentors...
